Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support for Seafarers

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS – This module deals with the origins and causes of psychological problems/disorders, different mental disorders, risk factors & warning signs or symptoms. Further, it tackles concept of being mentally healthy and importance of emotions/feelings in one’s wellness or well-being.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID – This module provides knowledge and skills that are essential in maintaining mental health & wellness. The various methodologies introduced in the course aims to equip participants with helpful behaviors & relational skills to gain deeper or meaningful relationships and effectively cope with mental health issues and concerns.

Further, the training includes a simulation of skills, incorporating the core competencies of psychological first aid.

Course Aims & Objectives:

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS – This module aims to provide awareness and raise learning on the different issues & problems surrounding mental health and consequently promote understanding towards being mentally healthy & maintaining emotional wellness.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID – This module aims to support and promote acquisition of knowledge and important skill set around methods & techniques and practices on stress management, counseling & communication/relationship, and psychological first aid.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
The course deals with the following lessons and training areas:

  • Mental Health Issues and Problems
  • Myths versus Realities about Mental Health
  • Normal versus Abnormal Behaviors
  • Classification of Abnormality
  • Causes and Origins of Mental Disorders
  • Common Psychological Disorders
  • Red Flags and Referrals
  • On Being Mentally Healthy
  • Emotional Intelligence and Awareness

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID
The course deals with the following lessons and training areas:

  • Stressors and Stress Management
    – Types
    – Physical, Cognitive, Emotional and Behavioral Indicators
    – Stress and Personality Types/Styles
  • Diathesis-Stress Model
  • Coping Strategies and Preventive Techniques
    – Mindfulness, Deep Breathing and Muscle Relaxation, etc.
  • Basic Counseling Skills
    – Definition and Misconceptions
    – Attending and Listening Skills
    – Skills in Asking Questions
    – Tracking Skills
    – Responding Skills
    – Feedbacking Skills
  • Psychological First Aid
    – Required Core Competencies

Method:

Combination of lecture, workshops, and interactive discussion reinforced with clinical cases/experiences that can be applied on both sea-based and office based setting.

Entry Requirement / Target Group:

Entry to this course is open to all shipboard officers and crew, as well as office managers and staff.

Course Certificate:

A Certificate of Completion shall be given to each
participant who satisfactorily fulfills the Course and its Assessment.
