A Journey Toward Leadership in Training & Development
What inspired Capt. Bong to pursue a career in training and development and eventually lead as a Training Director becomes a story of unexpected discovery.
“I didn’t plan to enter training and development, but I’ve always aimed to succeed beyond my life at sea. Wanting to be present for my family led me ashore, where I discovered a passion for developing people. The leadership and mentoring skills I gained as a Master Mariner naturally guided me toward this path. Today, as a Training Director, I find purpose in shaping others to grow, perform, and lead.
”The path toward leadership is rarely linear—it is shaped by purpose, experience, and a deep commitment to people.
Keeping Training Relevant in a Fast-Changing Maritime World
Capt. Bong emphasized that relevance is not a one-time effort but a continuous commitment.
“At NTC, our mantra is ‘We stand for excellence’ and that drives everything we do. In an industry that evolves rapidly, staying relevant means never becoming complacent. We continuously anticipate changes in technology, regulations, and seafarer competencies, and adapt our training programs accordingly. It’s a challenge, but one we embrace proudly, because being ‘ahead of the game’ is not just our goal; it’s our standard. That’s what being NTC means.”
Leadership Lessons Forged Through Experience
According to Capt. Bong, true leadership is proven not by position, but by presence.
“One key leadership lesson I’ve learned as a Training Director is the importance of presence. I’m inspired by the words of this famous lady that I love, ‘The number one ingredient aside from character is you show up in the most difficult times. If you don’t show up in the most difficult times, you are not a leader.’True leadership means standing with your team, not only when things are going well but especially when challenges arise. That’s the kind of leadership I strive to live by, being there for my team, guiding, supporting, and growing with them through both good and difficult times.”
Guidance for Future Leaders in Training
We asked Capt. Bong what advice would he give to aspiring training leaders and his answer transforms into a heartfelt message to the next generation as he highlighted that genuine leadership begins with humility.
“My advice to aspiring training leaders is to stay grounded and never forget your humble beginnings. Remember what it felt like to start—the challenges, the learning, and the mentors who helped you along the way. Those experiences keep you connected and authentic. As you grow, let humility and empathy guide how you lead and develop others. I have little compassion for entitlement or arrogance; leadership is not about feeling superior, but about serving with integrity, respect, and a genuine desire to uplift others. That’s how you make a meaningful and lasting impact.”
The Future of Maritime and Technical Training
Capt. Bong shared that progress in the industry must be matched by progress in training.
“As long as ships are sailing, training will always be needed. But to stay relevant, we must evolve, embracing digitalization, automation, and sustainability. At NTC, we stand for excellence by continuously adapting and preparing seafarers for the future.”
After nine years with the Norwegian Training Center – Manila, Captain Jo Even Tomren has decided to retire from the position as Chief Executive Officer effective from 1 December 2025. During his tenure, NTC-M continued to grow and strengthen its position as one of Asia’s leading maritime simulator training centers. The Board thanks Jo Even for his efforts and commitment to NTC-M.
As an interim solution, Chief Operating Officer, Capt. Knut Bentzrod, will oversee operations together with the Board until 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, Capt. Svend Foyn-Bruun will serve as interim CEO for a period of 6–8 months. In a recent interview with Capt. Knut Bentzrod, Chief Operating Officer of the Norwegian Training Center (NTC), his leadership journey took center stage. He shared how his approach to leadership is deeply rooted in accountability, guided by innovation with real-world impact, and anchored in uncompromising integrity. He emphasized the importance of empowering teams and cultivating a culture of trust, principles that have helped shape NTC into a globally respected institution.
Drawing from decades of maritime experience, Capt. Knut offered valuable insights into the values that define NTC’s mission: transparency, collaboration, and a commitment to uplifting communities through education and global partnerships.
We offer more than 80+ specialized courses with different learning approaches from face to face learning to virtual classes.
In an insightful discussion, the CEO of the Norwegian Training Center (NTC) reflected on the challenges, growth, and leadership journey of managing the organization for over five years. Transitioning into the role brought the unique challenge of integrating Norwegian leadership values with Filipino traditions, fostering collaboration while respecting cultural differences. The experience has been demanding yet deeply rewarding, allowing for personal and professional growth while shaping the organization’s development.
Leadership often involves making swift yet informed decisions in unpredictable situations. The CEO emphasized the importance of gathering information, listening to colleagues, and assessing the broader context before taking action. Decisions in a maritime environment, particularly in crisis situations, require agility and confidence. Whether responding to an oil spill in Mindoro or proposing major organizational changes, decision-making is driven by responsibility and strategic thinking rather than impulse.
Remaining informed is crucial in a rapidly evolving maritime industry. NTC leverages its connection with the Norwegian Shipowners Association (NSA) and its extensive network of industry partners. Seafarers, training courses, and global industry forums provide a continuous flow of information, allowing the organization to adapt to emerging trends such as decarbonization and new technologies. Striking the right balance between innovation and timing is critical—being too early can be costly, while being too late can lead to falling behind competitors.
Respect is the foundation of effective leadership, according to the CEO. Regardless of background or role, fostering a culture of mutual respect strengthens collaboration and enhances organizational performance. Continuous development as a leader requires active engagement with industry peers, openness to feedback, and a willingness to adapt to new generational expectations. Observing team dynamics, researching leadership trends, and embracing constructive criticism allow leaders to refine their approach and evolve alongside their teams.
Through experience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to growth, the CEO remains dedicated to leading NTC toward a future of innovation, collaboration, and industry excellence.
Cadet’s Journal: A Beat for the Future
International Day of the Seafarer 2025
In celebration of this year’s International Day of the Seafarer, cadets from the NSA Cadetship Program stepped forward with a performance that goes beyond routine—a creative piece titled Cadet’s Journal.
Written by Joshua David Terania from the NSA’s 26th Batch and performed by cadets from the 27th Batch, this original rap offers a fresh perspective on the pace, mindset, and discipline shaped through cadetship.
From the lines “Gotta survive, gonna log it on my diary” to “Nothing in the outside world can bind me,” the piece reflects a generation that approaches maritime preparation with both structure and self-expression.
It is more than a musical piece—it is a statement of readiness. Of presence. Of clarity. Of what it means to take the first steps toward a life at sea.
As we recognize the contributions of seafarers around the world, we also highlight those preparing to carry the profession forward—with purpose, rhythm, and commitment.
Cadet’s Journal is not just a track. It’s a preview of the future.

At the Norwegian Training Center, we proudly recognize our own trailblazers, including 2nd Officer Maribel Singian, a dedicated NSA Batch 22 alumna. Her journey as a Filipina seafarer is a shining example of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
In this special feature, Maribel shares her inspiring story — from her early days as a cadet to rising through the ranks in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her voice adds to the growing chorus of women proving that the ocean holds boundless potential for those who dare to lead.
Maribel's experience is more than personal — it's a message to women everywhere: the maritime world is full of promise. With access to training, mentorship, and equal opportunity, we can continue to open an ocean of opportunities for women across the globe.
