This course is intended for experienced deck officers responsible for navigational watch, including Masters and Maritime Pilots involved in maneuvering large vessels. It focuses on essential principles and techniques for the safe and efficient handling of large ships. Application activities through simulation-based exercises are conducted using a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) Full Mission Bridge Simulator.

The course takes into account the guidance regarding additional training for masters and chief mates of large ships prescribed in Section B-V/a of the STCW Code, as amended. 

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to gain practical understanding of the principles & techniques on how to effectively maneuver and maintain control of large vessels.

The course provides ship handling lessons and series of practical exercises utilizing large vessel ship models:

1. Ship Handling Principles
   
   • Basic Maneuvering, Rate of Turn, The Pivot Point, Propulsion and Maneuvering System, Thrusters, Tugs, Hydrodynamic Interaction – Shallow Water Effect, Passage Planning Guides for Deep Draft Vessels, Anchoring Procedures, Berthing / Unberthing Concepts
2. VR Bridge Simulator Familiarization
   
   • Operation of the VR Equipment
   • Maneuvering Tests – Standard Maneuvers
3. Bridge Simulator Exercise
   Utilizing large ship models (ballast, partially loaded, fully laden) focusing on:
   
   • Various maneuvers in open and confined waters, including narrow channels and rivers
   • Use of main engines, thrusters and tugs
   • Docking and undocking maneuvers, anchoring, and picking up pilots
   • Handling of vessel during heavy weather, in light or heavy ballast condition.
