Ship Maneuvering and Handling
GENERAL SHIPHANDLING SIMULATOR COURSE
This course is designed for all experienced
deck officers in charge of a navigational watch, including Masters and Maritime
Pilots. The course essentially covers most of the important principles and
techniques on how to safely and efficiently handle a vessel in common
situations.
COURSE AIMS:
Upon completion of the course,
participants should be able to gain comprehensive understanding and improved
ability on how to effectively maintain control of a ship when maneuvering in
open and confined waters, docking, undocking, anchoring, and in time of
emergencies
COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:
The course
provides ship handling lessons and series of practical exercises utilizing
different ship models:
I. Ship Handling Principles:
- General Principles, Rate of Turn, The Pivot
Point, Propulsion and Maneuvering System (Rudders & Propellers), Thrusters,
Tugs, Anchoring, Interaction, Squat and Sinkage
II. Simulation Activities / Exercises focusing
on:
- Various maneuvers in open and confined waters, including narrow channels and rivers
- Use of main engines, thrusters and tugs
- Obtaining original data for turning circles, crash stop, and man overboard recovery
- Docking and undocking maneuvers, anchoring, and picking up pilots
