NTC Course
Methanol Firefighting and Safety Training for Seafarers
Marine Engineering Courses Methanol Firefighting and Safety Training for Seafarers
This course is intended for marine engineers, deck officers, and shipboard crew on methanol-fueled vessels. The training is designed to equip seafarers with the knowledge and skills needed to identify, assess, and respond to methanol-based fires onboard ships using appropriate firefighting techniques and equipment. Particular emphasis is placed on the properties of methanol, risks associated with invisible flames, and the use of infrared detectors in identifying fire presence. Participants will engage in lectures, equipment demonstrations, and practical scenarios.
COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
This course aims to provide practical knowledge and skills to safely identify, assess, and respond to methanol-related fire incidents onboard ships, in compliance with the requirements of the STCW Convention, the guidance of IMO MSC.1/Circ.1621, the provisions of the IGF Code, and other applicable Class and Flag State regulations, ensuring that participants are capable of applying internationally recognized standards and best practices in methanol firefighting operations.
Hence, those who shall successfully complete this course should be able to:
- explain the physical and chemical properties of methanol and relate them to the identification of associated hazards and risks in shipped environments
- select and apply appropriate firefighting strategies and equipment specific to methanol fires, ensuring safe and effective suppression
- demonstrate the correct use of infrared detectors to identify the presence of methanol fires and integrate this technology into fire detection and response procedures.
- apply firefighting techniques in simulated methanol fire scenarios, working effectively as part of a team to contain and extinguish fires while ensuring crew safety.
COVERAGE:
The course deals with the following subject/training areas:
- Properties and Hazards of Methanol
- Firefighting Strategies & Equipment
- Fire Detection and Use of Infrared Detectors
- Practical Application and Team Response
