NSA- Machine Shop Safety and Lathe Operations

The course is intended for Engine Cadets. It covers basic benchwork & safety practices and lathe machine operations. It combines hands-on learning in essential safety practices and basic benchwork techniques with practical training in operating a lathe machine. It aims to instills safety consciousness when working around equipment and machineries; and provide practical knowledge and skills in basic operation of lathe machine and relevant measuring instruments to fabricate simple parts like stud bolts and flanges.

In effect, the course aims to contribute in meeting the competency requirements relevant to "appropriate use of hand tools, machine tools and measuring instrument for fabrication & repair on board" specified in Table III/1 of the STCW Code, as amended, in preparation to becoming an operational level officer.

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • identify the basic proficiencies in the metal trades
  • identify hazards in the workshop and observe safety while working in the workshop
  • layout and make simple layouts for projects
  • fabricated metal projects following sound metal working processes
  • measure workpiece using vernier and micrometer caliper measurements
  • perform tool bit grinding to get the correct angles, clearance and rake
  • identify and describe the different parts and functions of a lathe machine
  • operate the different lathe work holding devices
  • calculate lathe machine RPM
  • perform basic lathe machine operations such as centering, facing, straight turning, drilling, boring and cutting v-thread
  • fabricate simple parts such as stud bolt and flange
  • observe safety precautions at all times of workshop operations
