Combined Basic and Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (NMA-accredited) STCW Convention Regulation V/4 Paragraphs 2 & 4


This is a combined basic & advanced level course in accordance with the Polar Code. It provides training to navigation officers to operate ships in polar waters and to address those additional provisions deemed necessary for consideration beyond existing requirements of the SOLAS and MARPOL Conventions, to take into account the climatic conditions of polar waters and to meet appropriate standards of maritime safety and pollution prevention.

The course is designed to meet the mandatory minimum STCW requirements for the training and qualifications of masters and deck officers on ships operating in polar waters, specifically as these apply to Tables A-V/4-1 "Specification of minimum standard of competence in basic training for ships operating in polar waters" and Tables A-V/4-2 “Specification of minimum standard of competence in advanced training for ships operating in polar waters”

COURSE AIMS:
This course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for Basic and Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters, in accordance with the provisions of Section A-V/4 Paragraphs 1 & 2 of the STCW Code, as amended.

Hence, those who shall successfully complete this course should be able gain relevant knowledge, understanding and proficiency to achieve the following competencies:

Table A-V/4-1:

  • Contribute to safe operation of vessels operating in polar waters
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with legislative requirements
  • Apply safe working practices, respond to emergencies
  • Ensure compliance with pollution-prevention requirements and prevent environmental hazards 

Table A-V/4-2:

  • Plan and conduct a voyage in polar waters
  • Manage the safe operation of vessels operating in polar waters
  • Maintain safety of the ship’s crew and passengers and the operational condition of life saving, fire-fighting and other safety systems

  2. Regulations and Standards (National/Regional)
  3. Vessel Characteristics
  4. Maneuvering in Ice
  5. Passage Planning and Reporting
  6. Icebreaker Operation
  7. Vessel Performance in Polar Waters / Low Air Temperature
  8. Crew Preparation, Working Conditions & Safety
  9. Environment

The simulator exercises shall focus on Maneuvering in Ice, Passage Planning, and Icebreaker Operation 

Entry Requirement / Target Group:

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP:
Holders of certificate as Master, chief mate or officer in charge of a navigation watch
