With the steady increase of female seafarers, the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) Cadet Program of the Norwegian Training Center (NTC), in collaboration with the Women and Gender Institute (WAGI) of Miriam College, conducted the inaugural Women Empowerment Seminar. This initiative aims to provide the cadets with solid knowledge and understanding of the safe and active participation of women in the maritime industry.
The 2-day seminar was attended by female cadets from NSA partner schools— DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DSCP) in Davao and University of Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) in Cebu—and highlighted topics of basic gender concepts, women’s rights, sexual harassment, feminist counseling, and psychological first aid. The session engaged the cadettes to delve into their views and notions on womanhood, at the same time, sharing their personal experiences as woman regardless of their status and sexual orientation. Toward the end of the last session, a female captain imparted her story from being cadet and the steps she took that led her to achieving success as a competent and well-rounded master mariner.
A total of 38 cadettes from DCSP participated last September 3-4, and 39 from UCLM on September 13-14. This initial assembly is a milestone not only for NSA but also for NTC, as it welcomed the participation of WAGI to reinforce the values and status of woman in this modern and evolving world.
